A New Boiler Has to Match the System Already in the House

Boiler replacement is not simply a matter of taking the old unit out and setting a new one in its place. The new boiler has to work with the radiators, piping and water temperatures the house already depends on.

Nero's Heating & Air evaluates the entire hydronic system before recommending equipment. We check what the existing radiators need, how the piping is laid out and what the replacement has to deliver on the coldest days. That gives you a boiler sized for the house you actually have, along with a clear installation plan and price before the work begins.

5 Signs It May Be Time to Replace Your Boiler

Boilers can last a long time, so age alone is not enough reason to replace one. The decision starts to look different when the system is losing pressure, leaking, struggling to heat the house or needing repairs more often.

The Boiler Keeps Losing Pressure

If the pressure drops between visits and you are constantly topping the system back off, something is no longer holding the way it should. The cause may still be repairable, but repeated pressure loss is a sign the system needs a closer look.

Water Is Leaking From the Boiler Body

A leaking valve or fitting can often be repaired. Water coming from the boiler itself is more serious, especially on an older cast-iron unit, where corrosion or a failed section may be involved.

Boiler Repairs Are Becoming More Frequent

One repair does not make a boiler finished. Several repairs over a short period can. Once the same system keeps asking for money, it becomes worth comparing the next repair with replacement.

The House Is Uneven Even After Balancing the Radiators

If the radiators are working but some rooms still struggle to get comfortable, the boiler may no longer be keeping up with what the system needs. That is when sizing and overall condition become part of the conversation.

The Boiler Is Older and the Next Repair Is a Major One

A sound older boiler may still have useful life left. But when age is paired with a major failure, leaking sections or repeated service calls, replacement can make more sense than continuing to rebuild the system one repair at a time.

How Much Does a New Boiler Cost?

A boiler replacement estimate is free. If the system is still running and you are calling because something is wrong, the $75 diagnostic applies and is waived on the repair if you move forward.

The final replacement price depends on more than the boiler itself. Existing piping, gas-line capacity, removal of the old unit and any zoning changes can all add to the scope. We review those pieces before quoting the job, so you understand exactly what the installation includes before work begins.

Swapping the Boiler, or Changing What It Runs At

A Boiler Swap Is a Day's Work. The Other Is a Decision

A like-for-like swap puts a new unit on the system you have and it will work. Changing what the system runs at means adding emitter capacity so the water can run cooler, which is what lets a high-efficiency boiler reach the number on its label. The second costs more and is not always worth it.

Before You Sign a Boiler Quote

What Nero's Heating & Air Works Out First

A technician bleeding a cast-iron radiator into a cup

We size it against the radiators, not the old boiler's badge.

The unit coming out was very likely oversized when it went in, so copying its input copies somebody else's mistake forward another twenty years. What the house actually needs is a different number, and it is the one worth knowing.

You hear the condition attached to the efficiency.

A condensing boiler reaches its rated figure when the water coming back is cool enough. On a system built for hot water, it will not be, and you will have bought a number you cannot collect. Better to know beforehand.

The estimate covers the piping, not just the boiler.

The front few feet decide whether the system purges air properly and whether the pump helps or fights it. A quote that prices the box and leaves that vague is a quote with a hole where the difficult part goes.

From an Old Boiler to a New One

  1. Step 1.

We Look at How the House Heats Now

We start with the radiators or baseboards already in the home, how many rooms they serve and how the system is laid out. That gives us a better picture of what the replacement boiler actually needs to handle.

  2. Step 2.

We Size the Boiler Around the System

We look at what the house loses on a cold day and what the existing radiators can deliver. That helps us choose a boiler that matches the home instead of simply copying the size of the old unit.

  3. Step 3.

You See the Full Installation in Writing

The quote includes the boiler, near-boiler piping, gas connection, removal of the old equipment and any zoning work being added. Once you sign, the written figure is binding.

  4. Step 4.

We Fill, Purge and Test the New System

Once everything is connected, we fill the system, remove trapped air, set the pressure and run the boiler through a full heating cycle. Before we leave, we check that the system is circulating properly and show you what normal operation should look like.

Where We Install Boilers

Replacing a boiler is old-house work, and the DMV has no shortage of it. These jobs land in the District, the pre-war blocks of Prince George's County and the longer-established Montgomery neighborhoods far more than in anything built since. A town left off the list below is worth a call rather than an assumption.

Booking a Boiler Replacement Estimate

What to Have Ready for a Boiler Estimate

Tell us what the emitters are, because cast iron and baseboard behave differently and the answer starts there. Say roughly how old the boiler is, whether it is losing pressure, and whether any rooms have never really kept up. That last one often points at the system rather than the boiler, which changes what is worth buying.

  1. If You Have Another Quote Already

Bring it. The useful comparison is not the two totals, it is whether the radiators were looked at and whether the near-boiler piping is priced. We quote that scope so the two can be read side by side.

  2. If You Are Weighing It Against a Furnace

Say so early. Moving from radiators to ducted heat is a different job in a different price bracket, and it is worth being clear which conversation we are having before anyone quotes.

Commonly one to two days, and your heat is off for that whole window. Worth scheduling outside a cold snap if the old boiler is still limping along.

Almost always, yes, though the system usually needs flushing first. Decades of debris sits harmlessly in an old boiler and will not pass through a new one's narrower waterways.

Rarely all of it. What matters is whether the distribution pipe is accessible, because anything buried in a slab or a wall stays where it is regardless of condition.

Yes, in every jurisdiction we work in. Gas appliance replacement is inspected work, and a quote that never mentions one has left a real cost out of the total.

Usually somewhat. Much of the gain comes from not keeping a heavy cast iron mass hot between calls, rather than from the combustion efficiency printed on the box.
